Key Takeaways:
Dr. Cory Pilling completed a fellowship at the internationally recognized Ilizarov Scientific Center in Kurgan, Russia, as one of only two U.S. residents selected, training in advanced techniques for complex bone and limb deformities. Combined with Dr. Jason DeVries's residency in trauma, primary care, and diabetic limb salvage, and Dr. Jasen Chandler's dual-state residency in foot and ankle reconstruction, the skilled doctors at Canyon Foot + Ankle provide you with a broad base of advanced surgical training.
Putting your trust into a physician isn’t always easy, so it’s always important to gather all the information you can when considering foot surgery. Do research. Ask questions. Check credentials. Ultimately, you want the assurance that innovative techniques, dedicated experience, and comprehensive treatment will provide you a healing solution that resolves your problem effectively.
At Canyon Foot + Ankle Center, one aspect we’re most proud of in our practice is our ability to offer people throughout the Magic Valley highly skilled surgical options without requiring a long trip outside Idaho. When state-of-the-art care is close to home, you have more peace of mind in your progress. Let’s take a closer look at what Dr. Pilling, Dr. DeVries, and Dr. Chandler have to offer.
What’s the Ilizarov Method, and Why Does Training There Matter?
The Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics in Kurgan, Russia, is a primary orthopedic surgeon training program. Founded by Dr. Gavriil Ilizarov, his method uses an external fixation frame to gradually correct complex bone deformities and lengthen or reshape bone through a process called distraction osteogenesis, in which controlled tension stimulates the body to grow new, healthy bone. It remains one of the most significant contributions to reconstructive orthopedic surgery, and training at the Kurgan center is considered a distinctive credential in the field.
Dr. Pilling's Fellowship at the Ilizarov Center
A fellowship is additional, specialized training a physician pursues after residency, focused on a narrow area of practice. Dr. Pilling was one of only two residents from the U.S. at the time granted a training fellowship at IIizarov Center. While there, he studied advanced techniques for repairing bone injuries and correcting complex deformities of the lower extremity and foot.
How Does This Fellowship Shape His Approach Today?
Dr. Pilling gained exposure to some of the most complicated bone reconstruction cases in the field—experience he now applies to foot and ankle trauma and complex deformities we treat at Canyon Foot + Ankle. It also complements his earlier pediatric training in the Ponseti method for clubfoot, rounding out a surgical background that spans some of the more difficult cases in podiatric medicine.
A World-Class Team With Complementary Surgical Training
Dr. Pilling's fellowship is one part of a larger picture. Dr. DeVries and Dr. Chandler also provide extensive advanced training to the practice, and together, the three doctors cover a wide range of surgical experience.
Dr. DeVries: Trauma, Primary Care, and Diabetic Limb Salvage
Dr. DeVries completed a three-year podiatric surgical residency at Legacy and Kaiser Portland Hospital, with training across trauma, primary foot and ankle care, diabetic limb salvage, and biomechanics. He’s board-certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.
Dr. Chandler: Dual-State Reconstructive Training
Also board-certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. Chandler trained in a dual-state podiatric surgical residency spanning Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Sacramento, California, concentrating on foot and ankle trauma and reconstructive surgery. This exclusive program exposed him to a wide range of clinical and surgical cases before he returned to his native Idaho.
Put Your Trust in Canyon Foot + Ankle’s Surgical Expertise
Three diverse training backgrounds, each focused on a different aspect of foot and ankle surgery, provide our team with an in-depth collaborative approach to complex cases.
