Common Foot and Ankle Sports Injuries

Some injuries happen in the blink of an eye. Others develop slowly, with each and every step you take adding a small amount to the discomfort. In either case, prompt treatment is important to help you stay at your best and prevent even worse injuries in the future. Some common sports injuries we treat include:

When injuries are not treated—or care is not taken to rehab them properly—more serious issues may develop. This includes worsening chronic pain resulting from the original injury, but may also include secondary problems such as:

  • Chronically unstable, wobbly ankles due to a bad sprain that hasn’t healed, or multiple sprains suffered over a long period of time
  • Reduction of muscle strength, flexibility, or range of motion
  • Early development of arthritis in joints

Staying Safe on the Field: Injury Prevention for Adult Athletes

Whether you're a weekend warrior, a recreational athlete, or competing at a high level, reducing your risk of sports injuries is essential for staying active and pain-free. Here are some key tips to keep in mind:

1. Get a Physical Before the Season Starts

A pre-season physical isn’t just for kids—adults should also check in with a doctor before ramping up activity, especially if returning from an injury or dealing with ongoing health concerns. A physician can offer personalized advice to help you perform safely.

2. Wear Proper, Sport-Specific Footwear

The right athletic shoes provide essential support and help prevent common foot and ankle injuries. Make sure your shoes fit well, match the demands of your sport, and are replaced regularly to maintain proper cushioning and stability.

3. Ease Into Training Gradually

If you're starting a new sport or increasing activity levels after a break, build up slowly to prevent overuse injuries. Sudden increases in intensity can lead to sprains, strains, and stress fractures.

4. Maintain Safety Standards in Practice and Training

Most injuries occur during training rather than competition. Follow the same safety protocols during practice that you would in a game, including proper warm-ups, stretching, and using the right protective gear.

5. Avoid Sport Specialization Without Cross-Training

Even if you love one particular sport, varying your activities can reduce the risk of overuse injuries. Cross-training in low-impact exercises such as swimming, cycling, or yoga helps balance muscle development and prevents burnout.

6. Prioritize Rest and Recovery

Your body needs time to heal and rebuild. Take at least one full rest day per week during the season and consider a month-long break from intense training each year to prevent chronic injuries.

7. Warm Up, Cool Down, and Stay Hydrated

Prepare your body before and after games with dynamic stretching and cooldown routines. Proper hydration and nutrition also play a critical role in performance and injury prevention.

8. Pay Attention to Playing Conditions

Be mindful of weather conditions and field surfaces. Avoid playing in extreme heat, on wet or uneven terrain, or in conditions that increase the risk of slips and falls.

9. Listen to Your Body – Don’t Play Through Pain

Pain is a warning sign that something is wrong. Ignoring it can lead to more serious injuries and longer recovery times. If you feel discomfort, stop and seek medical advice before continuing to play.

By taking these precautions, you can stay active, perform at your best, and minimize the risk of injuries that could keep you off the field. If you're dealing with foot or ankle pain, contact us for expert care and customized treatment options.

What Should You Do If You Suffer an Injury to Your Feet or Ankles?

If a painful injury is affecting your activity, do not try to “walk it off.” Pain is a clear sign that something is wrong, and continuing to aggravate the injury will only worsen it.

Instead, stop your activity and begin basic RICE therapy—rest, ice, compression, and elevation—to help minimize pain and swelling and promote healing during the first few days after the injury.

For severe pain or obvious acute injuries like ankle sprains, call our office as soon as possible. For mild to moderate aches and pains, call us if your symptoms do not improve within a few days, get worse, or continue to return.

Personalized Treatment, Focused On Your Lifestyle

Our treatment options for sports injuries include everything from traditional conservative care to state-of-the-art non-surgical therapies. We’re strong believers that you shouldn’t have to go out to the big city to get the most advanced and effective treatment options, so we’ve brought them here to our Magic Valley practice.

Advanced treatments we are able to offer active individuals looking for an extra edge include:

  • MLS laser therapy. A technology used by professional athletes and regular folks alike to get back in the game in a matter of weeks instead of months—even after significant injuries. This incredible technology harnesses light energy as “fuel” for your cells, kickstarting metabolism, vascularization, and tissue repair mechanisms to accelerate the healing process.
  • Advanced custom orthotics. For athletes, we often prescribe semi-rigid orthotics made from graphite. This is a great choice for active people, since the material is durable enough to withstand heavy use, rigid enough to keep your feet stabilized, and at the same time still extremely lightweight, flexible, and comfortable.

Of course, not every individual will want or need one of these advanced options. For some, a little bit of rest and a new pair of shoes is all they really need! It all depends on your condition, your lifestyle, and your goals.

We personalize all our treatment plans to suit the needs of our patients first—everything you need, nothing you don’t. We’ll lay out all your options and give you honest feedback so you can make informed decisions about your care.
