If you’re battling thick, discolored, brittle toenails, you’re not alone. Fungal toenail infections, also known as onychomycosis, are incredibly common—and notoriously hard to treat with topical medications alone. Over-the-counter remedies often fail to reach the source of the problem deep under the nail. And while oral antifungal medications are more powerful, they’re not right for everyone. These drugs often have potentially serious side effects and may interact with other prescriptions.
At Canyon Foot + Ankle Specialists, we offer Multiwave Locked System (MLS) laser treatment as a modern solution that targets toenail fungus beneath the surface—without the risks of systemic medication. Here’s what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

How Does MLS Laser Therapy Work for Toenail Fungus?
MLS uses focused light energy to penetrate the nail and target the fungal organisms living in the nail bed. The goal is to heat and destroy the fungal cells without damaging the surrounding skin or tissue.
The procedure is non-invasive, typically painless, and requires no anesthesia. Most of our patients describe the sensation as a mild warming or tingling. There’s no need for bandages, and you can walk out of the office and resume daily activities immediately. Here’s what to expect at our Twin Falls or Burley offices.
How Do I Prepare for Laser Treatment?
Before your session, a few simple steps help ensure the process is as effective as possible. Depending on your condition, our podiatrists might suggest:
- Trimming and thinning the nails. Thicker nails may need to be filed down to help the laser reach the infected area.
- Stopping topical treatments. You may have to stop using antifungal creams or polishes before your appointment to avoid interference with the laser.
- Wearing clean socks and shoes. Bring a fresh pair to wear home after your treatment to minimize the risk of reinfection.
How Long Does Laser Therapy Take?
Each session typically lasts 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of nails affected. Most people require multiple treatments spaced out over several weeks, although this varies depending on the severity of the infection.
What Should You Expect After a Laser Therapy Session?
MLS treatment doesn’t instantly heal the nail. Instead, it kills the fungus within the nail matrix, allowing healthy tissue to grow over time. Here’s what happens next:
- Keep your feet clean and dry. We’ll give you instructions to reduce the risk of reinfection.
- Use preventative care. You may be prescribed antifungal sprays or powders for your shoes, as well as guidance on maintaining good foot hygiene to avoid fungal toenail infections in the future.
How Do I Know If It’s Working?
Healing from toenail fungus takes time, so you need a lot of patience with this process. On average, toenails grow about 1.6 millimeters a month! However, about 12–16 weeks after laser therapy, you should notice:
- Clearer nail growth. As a new nail emerges from the cuticle, it should be lighter in color and smoother in texture.
- No further discoloration or thickening. If the nail stops getting worse, that’s a strong sign the treatment is effective.
- Less odor or debris. Fungal infections often cause odor or buildup under the nail, so a decrease in both factors is a positive indicator.
Keep in mind, though: full regrowth can take 6–12 months, depending on the rate of nail growth. However, our team will monitor progress through follow-up visits and notify you if additional treatments or at-home care are required.
